I kept a trash journal through 2024 to put limits on the question: is it trash or art? Each season I’d buy a new journal and live with it for a week before I started working in it. My two rules were: 1) whatever went in the journal (materials, thoughts, found scraps) had to be on the way to the trash and if something I collected didn’t make it in the journal within 4 days, it ended there and 2) once a two page spread was completed, I couldn’t look at it until the end of the season.
